WhatsApp Pink Scam: How to Stay Safe and Uninstall the Malicious App

Scammers have devised a cunning plan to trick unsuspecting users into installing a pink-themed version of WhatsApp, known as ‘WhatsApp Pink.’ This fraudulent scheme is currently circulating on the popular instant messaging platform, enticing users with promises of a new official version featuring a pink theme and exciting new features.

While the app does change the interface to a pink color scheme, it is important to note that ‘WhatsApp Pink’ is a malicious application designed to steal sensitive data, including banking details, OTPs, photos, and contacts.

Internet security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia first uncovered the ‘WhatsApp Pink Scam’ in April 2021. To raise awareness and help users stay protected, the Mumbai Police Cyber Crime Wing recently issued a tweet highlighting the scam and providing guidelines on how to avoid falling victim to such fraudulent activities.

Here are some crucial steps to safeguard yourself from WhatsApp Pink-like scams:

  1. Stick to Trusted Sources: Only download and install apps from reputable sources like the Google Play Store. iPhone users need not worry, as Apple strictly prohibits installations from unknown sources.
  2. Avoid Unknown Websites and APKs: Refrain from installing apps obtained from unfamiliar websites or APKs shared by unknown individuals. Exercise caution and ensure the authenticity of the sources.
  3. Utilize the ‘Forwarded’ Label: On WhatsApp, pay attention to the “Forwarded” label, which helps determine if the message originated from a trusted contact or elsewhere. Be cautious when dealing with forwarded messages containing suspicious app download links.

Now, let’s explore how to uninstall WhatsApp Pink and eradicate the threat:

  1. Unlink Suspicious Devices: In your WhatsApp settings, navigate to the ‘Linked devices’ section and unlink any devices that appear suspicious or unfamiliar. This step helps sever unauthorized access to your account.
  2. Locate and Uninstall WhatsApp Pink: The security researcher has reported instances where WhatsApp Pink hides itself from the list of installed apps. To locate it, access the ‘Apps’ section in your phone settings, look for the ‘WhatsApp Pink’ app with the pink logo, and uninstall it promptly. Remember, some malicious apps may not have an identifiable name in the app list, so be thorough when removing any suspicious applications.

By following these precautions and promptly uninstalling WhatsApp Pink, you can protect your personal information and ensure a safer online experience. Stay vigilant and stay safe!
